Whether you call it hamburger gravy or SOSit is a delicious meal. Not only delicious but it is also a quick and simple recipe for those busy weeknights.
When life gets busy for us this is one of my go-to meals, it also helps that it's a family favorite. Hamburger in a creamy sauce smothered over mashed potatoes says comfort food to me, how about you?
Hamburger gravy can be served over mashed potatoes, rice, or over bread, my family prefers it over mashed potatoes. This recipe is one that always reminds me of when I first learned to cook. Every day my dad would leave me a note saying what was for dinner and how to cook it.
I think this was one of my first meal making because it is so simple and quick to make. Here is how to make hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes.
Old Fashioned Hamburger Gravy
Since potatoes take the longest to cook you could use our recipe for mashed potatoes in the instant pot. I will start by prepping the potatoes first. I like to use a veggie peeler to peel my potatoes.
The veggie peeler helps to peel the potatoes faster and doesn't take as much away from the potatoas a knife would. The amount of potatoes you use is your choice. The general rule I use is one potato for each person that will be at dinner plus an extra potato for good measure.
After I have all the potatoes peeled I'll cut them into smallerchunks, this helps cooking them go a little faster. I also think it helps when mashing them as well. Smaller sizes seem to mash easier in my option.
Once the potatoes are peeled and cut up, I will place them into a medium-size saucepan covered with water to boil. When the potatoes are fork-tender they are done.
Drain the water from the potatoes. When I make mashed potatoes I'll use my handheld mixer.I guess mine would be kind of whipped mashed potatoes then.
I like using the handheld mixer because I can get smoother mashed potatoes. Sometimes I do use theold hand masher as well.
No matter if I choose to use the handheld mixer or the hand masher, I'll start with mashing the potatoes up some. With them mashed upsome, I'll add a little bit of milk to smooth them out a bit.
I also will add a small amount of butter when I make mymashed potatoes to add more flavor to the potatoes. Now there have been times when I have used instant potatoes. Using the instant potatoes didn't change the overall taste of the meal much.
How To Make The Gravy
While the potatoes are cooking that is when I start browning my ground beef in a large fry pan. I bought this cool ground beef chopper a couple of weeks ago, I have to say I am really loving how easy it makes browning ground beef.
If you have read some of my other blogposts. You know my go-to seasonings are black pepper and seasoning salt. Sometimes I will also add a bit of garlic powder or even fresh garlic to this recipe.
As the ground beef starts to cook I'll season it and add diced onion and minced garlic. Once the ground beef is fully cooked drain the fat from the meat. When I drain the fat drippings I'll drain it into a can that is under my kitchen sink
To the browned ground beef add milk and cream of mushroom soup. Mix this all together well and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes or until heated all the way.
Server over those mashed potatoes or rice if you like and enjoy it. This recipe is great for weeknights since it's so quick to make. You may also enjoy our Salisbury Steak With Mushroom Gravy recipe.
