The Weekly Ride Review with Ethan: Kamen Rider Gotchard Episode 36 - The Toku Source (2024)

Watch out! The Abyssal King, Gigist, is making his move! How will Hotaro and the gang handle it? Let’s dive in to Kamen Rider Gotchard #36 in this week’s Weekly Ride Review with Ethan.

Recap

This episode opens with Kyoka getting Hotaro, Rinne, Sabi and Renge to help with a little experiment as part of her aim to help Lachesis to become human. She wants the gang to try and make her laugh, which she does eventually do after three attempts fail. Meanwhile, Spanner and Mr. Minato report about the Legend Edition arc’s events (Fun Fact: That’s actually the name of the last arc, no idea why the word “edition” is in there especially when “legend special” like his cards unique rarity is right there) to the higher ups in the Alchemist Union. Gigist reveals himself, confirming they are the demon the Alchemist of Daybreak fought long ago and that he is an empath. Using this power, he grants one of the higherups their desire for more power, inadvertently killing them

Spanner forgets that he isn’t actually him and transforms to try and take Gigist out, which goes about as well as you would expect.

We do get an interesting tidbit from Gigist after Mr. Minato helps Spanner escape. Spanner’s Kingdom Hearts darkness black flames came from Gigist, which is neat.

Clotho arrives and asks if Gigist is alright. He responds by saying Hotaro is next. Through the ending, we know this is mainly because Gigist wants to retrieve the Chemy egg that’s inside of him. Let’s be honest, his dad probably put in him to hide it from Gigist.

While shopping Hotaro finds friend to The Toku Source, Timelord, in some avocados (Ankh they could have helped you out!) just as Gigist warps him away. The captured Timelord disappears to get help and Gigist starts explaining that it was 120 years ago the Chemy egg split off from him and he wants his power back, shoving his hand into Hotaro’s chest.

The mystery egg releases a RAINBOWenergy, repelling Gigist who, in response to this, takes Skebows and Antrooper, explaining that he made the first Chemies and, therefore, the Alchemists where copying his achievement when they made the other Chemies. He adds that the chemies were originally meant to be a plague on humanity but they have been brainwashed by Hotaro. Gigist crushes the Skebows Chemy Card creating, what I’m going to be referring to as, an Abyssal Malgam because, honestly, it’s much cooler than “Malgam (Dark)”. I’m looking at you Kamen Rider Wiki. If you, dear reader, disagree, I would love to hear your suggestion for a better name or argument for “Malgam (Dark)” in the comments!

The rest of the gang arrive (minus Spanner and Minato) thanks to Timelord leading them to Hotaro. Rinne and Hotaro transform and start to fight but Gigist warps them with where Clotho is who is geared up in the Abyss Gear. The battle ends when Hotaro does a Platinum Hopper finisher on the Abyssal Malgam and the episode ends with Hotaro failing to recapture Skebows, and finding their colourless seemingly dead body.

At least for now, R.I.P. king…

The Bad

Other than not being super sure of how I feel about how Hotaro found Timelord, friend to The Toku Source, this episode does a really good job of doing what it set out to do. Only real thing is that I’m sure Skebows will get better and be brought back in an episode or two but that’s not really an issue with the episode.

The Good

When I say this episode does a good job of what it sets out to do, I’m talking about Gigist. It’s very clear this episode’s intent was to set him up as a credible, believable and powerful antagonist. I’m not going to call him the final boss yet on account of there’s still good odds of Hotaro’s dad appearing and taking that seat. Either that, or his dads going to show up in one of the movies.

The Conclusion

This episode was great and achieved what it wanted to really nicely and I can’t wait for next week. Apparently Rinne’s dad is returning and, I’m just going to say this now, I will be instituting a death counter for him if he dies again. All in all great stuff.

Over to you, Riders! Did you like this week’s episode? Do you think Gigist is a credible threat? Do you also think Skebows will be fine again soon? As always, I’ve been Ethan: Writer, reviewer and mourner of Skebows for The Toku Source and I’ll see you next time!
