Euro 2024 in Germany is UEFA's 1st step to raise pandemic-hit cash reserves above $550 million

  • By GRAHAM DUNBAR - AP Sports Writer

UEFA has a two-step financial mission to refill its pandemic-hit cash reserves. It starts with a men’s 2024 European Championship held in the home of the continent’s largest economy. Revenue of about $2.7 billion is expected from broadcast and sponsor deals, and sales of tickets, hospitality packages and licensing from staging a 51-game tournament in Germany. UEFA forecast close to half its Euro 2024 income will be profit of about $1.3 billion. UEFA wants to refill reserves to its preferred level around $550 million. The second phase of achieving that is by sending Euro 2028 to the UK and Ireland.

There was a delay in the fourth inning of the Boston Red Sox-Chicago White Sox game after three small bottles were thrown toward the field. • By MARC BOWMAN - Associated Press

Bobby Witt Jr. tied it with a two-run triple in the ninth inning and scored on Nelson Velázquez’s fielder’s choice to give the Kansas City Royals a 10-9 victory over Seattle after they trailed 8-0 in the fourth. After Maikel Garcia’s RBI grounder cut it to 9-8, Witt tripled into the corner in left. Velázquez followed with a grounder for the Royals’ third walk-off victory of the season. Kansas City had its largest comeback victory of the year and Seattle its largest blown lead. Witt had three hits, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Nick Anderson (3-1) struck out two in the ninth for the victory. Ryne Stanek (3-1) allowed two hits and walked three — two intentionally – in his second blown save.
